The RCN BATTLEFLEET Project
We were asked to create a game for Defence on the Dock 2022.
We created RCN Battlefleet.
We worked with Base Public Affairs to procure some old-school-style Battleship boards, then set to work coming up with ideas to make the game more Royal Canadian Navy-centric.
We took 3D models of our ships and waterlined them (gave them flat bottoms).
We used measurements from the ships in the original game to determine the length and width of the pieces, the size of the pegs and the dimensions and spacing for the peg holes.
We used 3D modeling software to turn our ships into game pieces.
We 3D-printed our pieces and test-fit them to the board - a few corrections and we had RCN Battlefleet game pieces!
We came up with some house rules (some of which required new game pieces that we designed and printed) and then play-tested what we had. I lost a lot. Mines are bad. So is the Kraken.
Our team created graphics for our 1-page rules which we then sent off to get officially translated.
We had a good time working on this game - people at Defence on the Dock got to play the game with Royal Canadian Navy personnel and it was a lot of fun.
